Fur Conditioning

Fur & Shearling Conditioning

Conditioning is the foundation of a fur or shearling garment's long-term health. Natural fur is a living material — it contains oils that keep it supple, lustrous, and resilient. Over time, exposure to heat, light, and everyday wear depletes those oils, leading to dryness, brittleness, and a loss of the softness and sheen that make natural fur so exceptional. Regular conditioning replenishes what time and wear take away, keeping your garment in its best possible condition for decades to come.

Why Conditioning Matters

Without regular conditioning, even the finest fur or shearling garment will begin to show signs of premature aging — stiffening, dulling, and in more severe cases, shedding or cracking. Conditioning is not a luxury — it is an essential part of responsible garment care, and one of the most effective ways to protect the investment you have made.

Annual conditioning by a qualified fur specialist will:

  • Restore the natural oils that keep fur supple and resilient
  • Prevent dryness, brittleness, and premature shedding
  • Maintain the depth, lustre, and softness of the fur
  • Extend the life of the garment significantly

Professional Conditioning

Conditioning should always be carried out by a qualified fur and leather specialist. The process involves hand-treating the entire garment — inside and out — with professional conditioning agents selected for the specific material. At GORSKI, our conditioning service is included as part of our annual care package, ensuring your piece receives the full attention it deserves each season.

  • Conditioning should be performed at least once a year, ideally before seasonal storage.
  • Never attempt to condition your fur at home with household products — incorrect products can cause irreparable damage.
  • Certain materials including sable, chinchilla, and broadtail require specialist conditioning by hand.

Glazing

Glazing is the final step of the professional conditioning process — a technique that restores the natural sheen and depth of colour to a fur garment, leaving it looking as rich and lustrous as the day it was made. Where conditioning replenishes the fur from within, glazing perfects its appearance from the outside. Together, they are the most complete treatment available for natural fur.
