Fur Storage

Fur & Shearling Storage

Proper storage is one of the most important things you can do to protect your fur or shearling garment. Heat, humidity, light, and improper handling are the most common causes of premature deterioration — and the most preventable. Whether you choose to store your garment at home or entrust it to a professional facility, the following guidance will help ensure your piece remains in exceptional condition season after season.

At Home Storage

If storing your garment at home, the following practices will help preserve its beauty and structure between wears:

  • Store on a broad-shouldered outerwear hanger — never a narrow or wire hanger, which will distort the garment's shape over time.
  • Choose a cool, dark, and well-ventilated closet — heat and direct sunlight cause drying and colour fading.
  • Allow space for air circulation — never crowd your fur or compress it against other garments.
  • Never store in a plastic or synthetic garment bag — natural fur needs to breathe. Use a cloth or breathable garment bag if cover is needed.
  • Never store near cedar — it will dry out the natural oils in your fur.
  • Remove or cover all metal accessories — belts, buckles, and hardware — before storing to prevent snagging or marking.

Professional Cold Storage

For seasonal storage, professional cold storage is strongly recommended. A humidity and temperature controlled vault maintains the precise conditions natural fur and shearling require to remain supple, lustrous, and free from deterioration over the long term. Home storage, however well managed, cannot replicate these conditions.

Professional cold storage protects your garment from:

  • Heat and humidity damage
  • Dust, mite, and moth deterioration
  • Colour fading from light exposure
  • Structural damage from improper hanging or compression
